Research & Interviews

The initial research included diving into the world of sidechains and 2nd layer chains of blockchains. This chains are in general used for enabling faster transactions times and cheaper costs.

Lightning Network

Our product would use Bitcoin's Lightning Network, a 2nd layer chain. I needed to understand how the product would work under the hood and what the technologies would allow us or not to do, to think about possible functionalities.

Competitive Audit

The research and audit would include both mobile apps from banks as well as crypto wallets. It would be essential to use design patterns and flows from both worlds, thus getting the best of each, so both types of users would feel familiar with the app. On the bank side I analyzed neo bank apps such as Revolut and N26 as well as more traditional bank apps such as Citi, Chase, etc. On the crypto side I analyzed blueWallet, Liquid etc as well as wallets from most popular centralized crypto exchange apps.

Interviews

At the beginning of the journey, I had to interview Blockchain experts to understand further the possibilities of 2nd layer chains.

User Stories & Flows

To generate ideas for personas we identified common traits between users of the company's similar products and stakeholders. We had "real" personas ranging from more aged and less experienced crypto users up to tech savy users.

Stories

After the initial research and establishing the main audience, we went on to the proccess of creating the first stories, that would serve both the design and development team. And that would help the Product Owner to establish the Road Map and guidance for future team members.

Flows

First flows defined users primary actions in the platform without which he would not be allowed to operate. Special attention was put to the register and sign in processes. We established a two factor authentication for the sign in. Deposits and withdrawal of funds to other wallets was also given a considerate amount of work.

IA & Wireframing

We decided to follow overall structure patterns from bank apps, but adding the functionalities and extras from crypto wallets, for instance the credit top-up for the account, pay with different methods (bitcoin, ligthning bitcoin), etc.

Information Architecture

For brainstorming the IA structure e used the breadboarding technique paralel to establishing main features and actions.

Sketches & Digital Wireframes

As we had strong time constraints for this project, we had to jump to the digital wireframes directly. We started with wireframes built from a basic components library.

HD Prototyping

Based on the Wireframes and LoFi Prototyping we started building more evolved and refined versions of the product, already making font and color palette choices.

Outcomes

Throughout this project I had the chance to work a lot with Blockchain and Bitcoin's 2nd layer and exploit bitcoin's sidechains possibilities. I've also learned a lot about building flows for Bank apps and Crypto Wallets. I also realized once again that it is hard to get the product right from the beginning.

Branding

The corporate image, along with the logo came as a consequence of the design of a parent brand (Turinlabs) that would host an ecosystem of inter related products. In this context I designed the main brand + 5 products logos and visual identity basics.

User Interface

Research for common patterns and structures included both direct as well as indirect competitors. In regards of visual design, I tried to to establish common design patterns and flows from both Bank apps as well as Crypto/ Blockchain wallets. I took special care in analysing how Crypto wallets manage the account top up. Also was very attentive to the way bank apps show previous transactions and payments in their screens. We wanted also, to inform the user at all times in which stage of the process he was, to reassure him/her/them at all times.

We went for a range of violets, that would inspire a modern feel for the app and that could also get along well in the Turinlabs parent brand ecosystem. Being the secondary color green we had to find the appropriate contrast to difference it from the success green color.

Typography

We choose Poppins font family, a geometric sans serif that would give the app a nice modern approachable look. Despite being a geometric font it works well in terms of readability and legibility at different sizes and devices.
